The on-going bicentennial celebrations of the War of 1812 continue in Niagara, according to the enthusiastic presenters who brought us up to date at a recent press conference in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
Some of the important events that lie ahead for history buffs and Niagara enthusiasts include the exhibition “Battlefield Niagara” at the Niagara Historical Museum that showcases the local events of 1813 including the occupation and burning of Niagara. The show runs until December 31. Also of interest on the lecture series circuit are the Bicentennial Lectures being presented by noted historians on the third Thursday of each month until September 2013. The Battle of Fort George
For those who enjoy a spectacle, the major re-enactment of the Battle of Fort George will take place on Saturday May 25th in Niagara-on-the-Lake. The Fort will be open from 10:00am to 5:00pm with more than 800 re-enactors expected for the battle, which will take place on the Commons. An evening show will be held at 8:00 pm on May 25, called the Bombardment of Fort George and will feature an artillery barrage, pyrotechnics, and fireworks inside the fort, all set to music. The combined effect will give the illusion of Fort George being set on fire. A second re-enactment will take place on Sunday, May 26th. Walk in Laura’s Shoes
On June 21 and 22, join in the walk to commemorate the courage of Laura Secord, exactly 200 years after she made the historic trek to alert British forces. The event will start with wine, cheese and chocolate at the Laura Secord House in Queenston, after which thousands of walkers will follow the Laura Secord Trail to DeCew House. Whether you choose to walk the entire distance or do one of the five stages into which the Trail is divided, you’ll be taking an important step into history. Parking and a shuttle bus service will be available from both Niagara College and the Laura Secord Homestead. Occupation!
In commemoration of the six and a half months during which the Town of Niagara was occupied by American troops during the War of 1812, the town of Niagara-on-the-Lake will fly the American flag and NY State militia troops will patrol its quaint streets.
